NEW MALTA JOURNALISM AWARDS CATEGORY

Posted Date: 24/08/2011

Malta Press Club - 24 August 2011

Promoting Integration and Intercultural Dialogue

The Institute of Maltese Journalists (IG.M) is pleased to announce that the 2012 Malta Journalism Awards is to have a new category: Promoting Integration and Intercultural Dialogue.

The sponsor of this award is SOS Malta as the lead partner of the Media InterAct project, which is co-financed through the European Fund for the Integration of Third-Country Nationals (TCNs). This is a one-year project aimed at initiating an avenue for mainstreaming the integration and diversity of TCNs within Maltese media and journalism.

“The IG.M is constantly looking for opportunities to enable journalists in Malta and Gozo, both members and non-members, to be more professional in their work and, through the Malta Journalism Awards, over the past 21 editions, this has certainly proved to be the case,” IG.M Chairman Malcolm J. Naudi said.

“We are making this announcement at this time because it is important for anyone intending to make submissions for the 2012 Malta Journalism Awards to be aware of the new category,” he added.

Claudia Taylor-East of SOS Malta said: “We view the Malta Journalism Awards as an ideal platform to encourage the local media to prepare feature stories, news stories and other content that capture the realities and the needs of an increasingly diverse audience and that provide a more accurate and balanced portrayal of TCNs in Malta”.

“We have partnered with the IG.M and the Public Broadcasting Services (PBS) Ltd on this project and we will be releasing more information about this project in due course.”

This is the 15th category in the Malta Journalism Awards, which has three print categories, three broadcast categories, an e-journalism category, six general categories and one for Best use of the Maltese Language in Journalism. And the Gold Award given to a journalist whose
contribution to Maltese journalism is considered beyond and above normal duties.

The 22nd edition of the Malta Journalism Awards will be officially launched in January, 2012.
